About Yolonda Lorig Colson

As the Chief of the MGB Division of Thoracic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, The Hermes C. Grillo Professor of Surgery in the Field of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Colson is a clinically active cardiothoracic surgeon and the 103rd President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. She leads a division of 30 board certified cardiothoracic surgeons specializing in the surgical treatments of diseases of the lung, esophagus, chest wall, mediastinum, and diaphragm with nearly 30,000 clinic visits and over 5,000 OR cases per year. She is responsible for the operations and financial success of thoracic surgery at 5 separate MGB hospitals and multiple off-site clinics throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Her training includes cardiothoracic surgery training at Brigham and Women's Hospital, general surgery residency and a PhD in Immunology at University of Pittsburgh, medical school at Mayo Medical School and an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  Her time is divided between the surgical treatment of lung cancer, translational research, and administrative roles as described above. Her area of clinical expertise and innovation is the development of new approaches to diagnose occult nodal metastases in lung cancer and to prevent and treat tumor recurrence after "curative" surgical resection. This focus has led to her clinical interest in women’s lung cancer with the goal of identifying the unique characteristics of lung cancer in women and facilitating better understanding of lung cancer in all patients. She sees patients at both Mass General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

During her tenure as the inaugural Michael A. Bell Family Distinguished Chair in Healthcare Innovation, she built a collaborative research program focused on the design of realistic and practical clinical solutions to key surgical problems such as tumor recurrence.  As a leading research group in the design and implementation of polymer-mediated chemotherapy release and lymphatic drug delivery, her laboratory initiated a novel NCI-funded clinical trial that was the first to use near-infrared imaging for lymphatic mapping in lung cancer patients. Development of this technology has opened the clinical potential for intranodal nanoparticle drug delivery for future first-in-human trials for prevention of local tumor recurrence and ultimately treatment of occult nodal metastases in situ. To date, this collaborative approach to innovation has resulted in 3 inter-institutional patents in drug release technology, the Edward M. Kennedy Award for Health Care Innovation, the 2011 Women in Science honoree at the Boston Museum of Science and election into the National Academy of Medicine with over 7 NIH R01/U01 grants, over 135 manuscripts, more than a dozen post-doctoral or resident research awards and a new design collaborative with industry.

I've been Dr. Colson's patient for 13 year. She's performed six successful surgeries and when I developed pneumonia due to an air leak she saved my life. She is a remarkable person, an even more remarkable doctor - or I don't think she'd be the head the combined thoracic surgery departments - and I count my blessings every day that when my chondrosarcoma matastesized, she drew the short straw and got me. We've been through a lot together, and I'd walk over hot coals for her.
