About William M Oliver

Dr. Oliver is a fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeon, specializing in musculoskeletal trauma and post-traumatic reconstruction of the upper and lower extremity.  He serves as the director of the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Orthopedic Trauma Service.

Originally from England, Dr. Oliver earned his undergraduate degree in Law from the University of Manchester, UK.  He then earned his Medicine degree from the University of Newcastle, UK, graduating with Honours in the top 5% of his class.  Dr. Oliver completed his residency in the prestigious South-East of Scotland Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery Program, based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, UK, and was subsequently admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.  During residency, he undertook an orthopedic trauma research fellowship with the University of Edinburgh, leading to the award of a doctoral research degree in the management and outcomes of humeral shaft fractures.  Dr. Oliver went on to complete an advanced orthopedic trauma fellowship with the University of Calgary, Canada, based at Foothills Medical Centre, gaining expertise in the management of pelvic and acetabular fractures, peri-articular and periprosthetic fractures, and post-traumatic joint reconstruction.

Dr. Oliver has an established background in clinical research, with a focus on improving patient outcomes following traumatic injuries.  He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed academic publications, and delivered over 100 national and international presentations on topics related to orthopedic trauma care.  His research has received international recognition with awards from the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and Orthopaedic Trauma Association.  In 2024, he joined a group of volunteers from across Canada on a mission delivering specialist orthopedic surgery to remote communities in Guatemala.  He is passionate about research, education, and ensuring the highest quality of care for his patients.

Dr. Oliver has an interest in the management of all fractures of the upper and lower extremity, pelvis and acetabulum, including those involving joints (peri-articular fractures) and joint replacements (periprosthetic fractures).  His other surgical interests include managing fracture-related complications such as wound/hardware problems, delayed healing (nonunion), post-traumatic deformity (malunion), joint pain/stiffness (post-traumatic arthritis) and nerve compression syndromes.
