William L Hwang, MD, PhD

William L. Hwang, MD, PhD is a Principal Investigator and Physician-Scientist at the Department of Radiation Oncology, Center for Systems Biology, and Krantz Family Center for Cancer Research at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS), where he leads the Laboratory for Spatial and Systems Oncology and cares for patients with pancreatic cancer. His laboratory studies tumor-stroma interactions through single-cell and spatial biology, advanced microscopy, and perturbational studies applied to patient-derived specimens, stromal tumoroids, tumor slice cultures, and mouse models. Dr. Hwang is particularly interested in how cell state plasticity and cell-cell interactions in the tumor microenvironment mediate cancer progression, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance. His research has resulted in more than 60 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Nature, Cell, Nature Genetics, Cancer Cell, and Cancer Discovery, and he is an internationally recognized expert in pancreatic cancer, spatial oncology, and cancer neuroscience. His work has been recognized with numerous awards including summa cum laude graduation honors from Harvard Medical School, Career Award for Medical Scientists from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, NextGen Star of the American Association for Cancer Research, 40 Under 40 in Cancer Award: Rising Stars and Emerging Leaders, Sir William Osler Young Investigator Award, Abeloff V Scholar Award, and Young Physician-Scientist Award from the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
