MaleAbout Tomas G Neilan
Dr. Neilan received his M.D. from University College Dublin and MPH from Harvard School of Public Health. He completed internal medicine residency and cardiology training at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin and again at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has also completed extensive training in echocardiography at Massachusetts General Hospital and cardiac magnetic resonance at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Neilan is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the Director of the Cardio-Oncology Program and the Co-Director of the Cardiac MR PET CT Program.
Dr. Neilan has had a long-standing clinical and research interest in the cardiovascular care of patients with cancer. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death and disability among cancer survivors and cardiovascular care for patients with cancer requires a tailored approach that is unique for each patient. He is specifically interested in how we can improve on the methods for detection of the cardiac toxicity after chemotherapy and radiotherapy and to use that information to determine how we care for patients.

Well, I find that Dr. Neilan listens. He's always given me really good advice. He explains very well why there's a change in medication, what to expect, and he does ask me for feedback when I start on a new prescription, which is great. Yeah, I would always recommend him for anybody needing any kind of heart care. Thank you.

PLEASE use the term Doctor where appropriate not "provider". Being politically correct is not educationally/medically correct .

I feel after one year being treated for my cardiac condition , a good job has been done by the doctor. BUT I feel the dept is way understaffed for the amount of patients coming in. Hire some new young cadiologists to pick up the load before an accident or mistake happens to someone.

My provider was extremely helpful, courteous and professional. He definitely had chosen the right specialty,I.e., to deal with the heart. He definitely has big heart, is empathetic, and accommodating. It reminds me of a short story, which goes somewhat like this. All the individual parts of a wrist watch were arguing as to how important/indispensible they were for the functioning of the watch, while the main spring stayed silent and kept on ticking, thereby enabling the watch to function. If it stopped to argue, there won't be a watch. In human body, heart is comparable to the main spring. Dr. Tomas Neilan is like that. I hope he keeps my heart beating (medically that is) for lllooonnnngggg time.

Dr Neilan has cared for me for the past seven years with kindness, compassion and great efficiency and skill, (not to mention good humor)! He and my oncology team have worked together seamlessly to provide me with great care, referring me to other sub specialists as needed, but always staying on top of my overall clinical picture.

Tom exemplifies all of the qualities asked about in this survey and he does so in a professional yet kind and engaging manner. I really appreciated all of the time he spent with me and that he reached to the surgeon he recommended while I was still there. I already have a consult scheduled with the surgeon which makes me feel a lot better. I couldn't ask for more.

Dr. Neilan is a stellar physician. He may be the only doc I'll give all 10's. I am very happy w all my MGH providers, but he is far and away the best. He is knowledgeable, calm compassionate, interested, and interesting. I see him once every one or two years, and it's obvious to me that he's checked my chart before I get there. He knows who I am and he knows why I'm there.
