About Robert H Young

Dr. Young, a native of Northern Ireland, is a 1974 graduate of Dublin University. After early training there in the University Pathology Department he joined the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1977, where he completed a residency. He then did a fellowship in gynecologic pathology under the direction of Dr. Robert E. Scully and joined the faculty in 1981. He is the Robert E. Scully Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and his primary interest is gynecologic pathology with a strong secondary interest in urologic pathology. Dr. Young has written over 400 original publications, numerous reviews and book chapters and has authored or edited 13 books. His papers on gynecologic pathology have been broad but with an emphasis on ovarian tumors. In both gynecologic pathology and urologic pathology, he has a strong interest in non-neoplastic mimics of neoplasia and has also had a major interest in testicular tumors. Among many awards, he received the Fred Waldorf Stewart Award of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (2015), the Leopold Koss Lifetime achievement award for contributions to urologic pathology (2011) and the President's Medal, British Division of the International Academy of Pathology for Contributions to Education (2019). His educational activities have included mentoring of many residents and fellows and directing numerous (over 100) Harvard Medical School postgraduate courses. He has long had a strong interest in medical history and co-edited (2011) a book (with Dr. David N. Louis) on the history of pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and has edited for many years a series of essays on major figures in gynecologic pathology published in the International Journal of Gynecologic Pathology.
