Paul W. Furlow, MD, is a board-certified thoracic surgeon and faculty member at Harvard Medical School. He serves as Director of the Mass General Metastasis Biology Laboratory within the Thoracic Surgery Research Laboratories at Massachusetts General Hospital and is a Fellow in the Center for Precision Cancer Medicine at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Furlow specializes in the surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the lungs, airways, pleura, chest wall, and mediastinum. He has particular expertise in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, including robotic and video-assisted approaches, and in the multidisciplinary treatment of lung cancer and tumors that have spread to the lungs. He cares for patients at Massachusetts General Hospital, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, and Salem Hospital.
As a thoracic surgeon-scientist, Dr. Furlow develops research questions from problems encountered in the operating room and in the care of patients with lung cancer. His laboratory investigates the biological mechanisms that allow cancer cells to invade the lung airspaces, metastasize, and recur following surgery. In close collaboration with Michael Yaffe, MD, PhD, and other investigators across MIT, the Broad Institute, and Mass General Brigham, his research seeks to identify biomarkers and develop new therapeutic strategies to prevent lung cancer progression and postoperative recurrence.

I just want to say it's like the first time that I met the guy and he was pretty solid with what was going on with me, answered my questions, understood my little bit of metaphors that I kind of used to understand the situation better. There's no instructions to what we are dealing with when it comes to this cancer and what the doctors try to provide. It's a very scary thing and it's a very horrible thing to go through on a patient's end. You think about things, you see things, you feel things, you are actually like a different person than the people that say are not sick, they come to work or are living normal lives. You don't know until things happen to you, to what you see, but the staff he has, the doctor himself are very caring, very knowledgeable, caring people and listen to ?

Dr Furlow answered every question I had and he explained everything in detail to help lower my anxiety. He took his time and gave my husband and I all the time we needed. He explained what the treatment would be if it was cancer and also explained scans I would have to do even if it wasn't cancer. He listened to all my concerns without judging my anxiety and he gave comfort when my husband and I were both in tears. He gave me options for my treatment and allowed me to make the choice that I felt best with. I could not ask for a more understanding and knowledgeable Dr. , he even diagnosed something unrelated. One of the best Dr's I have ever had.

Dr. Furlow explained everything to me very well in terms I could understand instead of a lot of doctor medical lingo that I probably couldn't. I appreciated that very much. He answered all my questions that I had, very patient and very kind. And I do enjoy having him as my doctor. I wish it was for other reasons, but I feel very comfortable with him and I was very happy with the Zoom calls and how everything went. So thank you.
