About Nikolaos P Zacharias

Nikolaos Zacharias is a vascular surgeon in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of the faculty of surgery at Harvard Medical School. He also spends time in our affiliated hospital, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. His area of practice is abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, mesenteric ischemic, thoracic outlet syndrome, hemodialysis access and venous disease. He is particularly interested in improving social disparities in patients with vascular disease, as well as developing health policies to assure health equity and exceptional outcomes in patient care. He is nationally known for his work in the Society for Vascular Surgery Performance Measures Committee, and he is the Quality and Safety director for the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Mass General.

Dr. Zacharias conducts clinical research to improve vascular surgery outcomes. He has led several clinical research projects involving innominate artery revascularization, the establishment of duplex restenosis criteria for visceral stents, cost-benefit analyses of transcarotid arterial revascularization and outcomes of CryoVein revascularization for critical limb threatening ischemia. During his time as a research fellow at the Mass General Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, he focused his research on novel methods for management of polytrauma patients. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Vascular Surgery Venous and Lymphatic Diseases.

Dr. Zacharias takes an active role in the education of vascular surgery fellows, residents and medical students by providing lectures and operating room training. He dedicates time to teaching Mass General trainees how to identify areas of improvement in quality of care. Moreover, he mentors research residents on quality improvement projects focused on decreasing hospital length of stay for elective carotid endarterectomy and endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm patients.

Dr Zacharias is extremely thorough and knowledgeable. He took the time to listen to me; he reviewed my medical history; he gave a great deal of thought to determine the best and safest way to approach treatment for a complex case. He is very caring, patient and personable. He is very respectful and thoughtfully considered my input. I felt heard and felt that he valued my input. He is extraordinarily intelligent and capable. He is carefully looking out for my safety. I am terrified by the complexity of my health issues and my current health conditions but I am extremely confident that I am in the best hands possible with Dr. Zacharias. I trust him with my life. Zacharias is an outstanding person as well as physician. I am extremely grateful that he took me on as a patient. Thank you for this opportunity to express my gratitude.

The physician was fantastic, I would recommend him and his staff for anyone I know that is looking for such a specialist. He was exact, open minded, excellent communicator. He was excellent in the medical services he provided to me. I was nervous and he took the time to explain to me what was going on and what he was doing to handle the issue I brought to the department. [redacted] I just can't say enough about the services I receive and continue to receive at MGH Mass General Brigham, By far the best in the World!! [redacted]

This provider, Dr. Nikolaos Zacharias, is one of the best providers I've dealt with at Mass General. And mind you, I work at Mass General in the neurology department. He is amazing. He's courteous. He's always on time when I need to be there. Sometimes he's there before me. So I appreciate him. I appreciate his coordinator, Adrian, who always calls me to make my appointments and everything that I need. Keeps me in touch with the doctor. And I just met Nurse Jamie, who's also amazing.
