Michael Flaherty is a pediatric critical care physician in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at MassGeneral for Children and a leading researcher in the field of pediatric injury prevention and epidemiology. He grew up in North Andover, MA and attended Emmanuel College in Boston where he obtained a B.S. in biology and chemistry. He went on to obtain his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, ME and returned to Massachusetts to complete his residency in pediatrics at the Baystate Medical Center/Tufts University program.
During residency, he became interested in pediatric injury prevention research, and was part of the first group to study graduated driver licensing for the prevention of adolescent motor vehicle fatalities in Massachusetts. He went on to complete his fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital where he became involved with the Trauma and Injury Prevention Outreach Program where he is now co-director. He stayed on as faculty at MassGeneral for Children where he continues research in pediatric trauma and injury prevention, as well as maintains active interests in medical education. His clinical interests include the care of critically ill children in all capacities, as well as specifically in the medical treatment of pediatric trauma victims, and the treatment of severe refractory asthma.
