Melissa M Murphy, MD, MPH

Dr. Melissa Murphy is a colon and rectal surgeon with Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is the Executive Chief of Surgery of Care New England in Rhode Island as well as the Chief of Surgery at Kent Hospital. She is an instructor in surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Murphy received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and a master of public health degree from Boston University. She completed a general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Murphy is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery.

Dr. Murphy practices colorectal surgery both in Boston and in Rhode Island. Her clinical interests include colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), diverticulitis, anorectal disease, and rectal prolapse with a focus on minimally invasive techniques including laparoscopic and robotic surgery and trans anal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS). She had been named a Top Doctor by Rhode Island Monthly every year since 2013-2021.
