Dr. Martinez-Lage received her medical degree from the University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain. After training in neurology in Barcelona, she trained in anatomic pathology, neuropathology, and selective surgical pathology at the University of Pennsylvania. After three years as faculty, she was recruited to Massachusetts General Hospital as Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, where she practices neuropathology. Since 2024, she serves as Program Director for both the Mass General Brigham pathology residency program and the Mass General Brigham neuropathology fellowship program.
She has actively participated in neuropathology education at diverse national venues and organizations and has served in several committees of the American Association of Neuropathologists (AANP), including the Education Committee. She has been co-director of the AANP Teaching Rounds, a national lecture series in neuropathology, since its launch in 2021.
Dr. Martinez-Lage is currently Vice Chair of the ACGME Review Committee for Pathology and a member of the Test Development and Advisory Committee for Neuropathology at the American Board of Pathology.
As an active leader of the AMA-funded Promotion in Place pilot project, she has contributed to the implementation of competency-based time-variable training in graduate medical education, and she continues to participate in innovation and scholarship projects in medical education.
Beyond her interests in education, Dr. Martinez-Lage's collaborative research focuses on the morphological and molecular diagnosis and immunological microenvironment of brain tumors and other disorders of the nervous system such as autoimmune and iatrogenic disorders, with an emphasis on translational and clinical applications.
