Kayla Theresa Hartjes, MD

Dr. Hartjes was born and trained in Massachusetts. She earned her Honors Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Saint Anselm College before obtaining her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2016. 

Dr. Hartjes completed her pediatric residency training at the University of Massachusetts, where she became board certified in Pediatrics. She then pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Mass General for Children, followed by advanced fellowship training in Pediatric Transplant Hepatology at Boston Children's Hospital. 

After completing her subspecialty training, Dr. Hartjes returned to Mass General for Children, where she currently serves as the Assistant Director of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program. 

Dr. Hartjes has a special clinical interest in metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and the care of children and adolescents with obesity-related liver disease. She founded the THRIVE Healthy Weight Clinic (HWC) at Mass General, an evidence-based Intensive Health Behavior and Lifestyle Treatment (IHBLT) program that provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for children and adolescents with overweight or obesity and liver disease. Through this program, she is committed to helping patients and families achieve lasting improvements in health through personalized lifestyle interventions and compassionate, family-centered care.
