Jonathan Winograd was born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1966. He grew up in Marblehead and graduated from Saint John’s Preparatory School as salutatorian in 1984. He attended Harvard College and graduated Magna Cum Laude in Biology in 1988, and Harvard Medical School, earning his medical degree in 1992. He then entered a combined general surgery/plastic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland/Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. During that time, he was a research fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Manson and Dr. Craig Vander Kolk, both internationally renowned craniofacial surgeons, and Dr. Gregg Semenza, a molecular biologist and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2019. Dr. Winograd then completed a fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at Washington University in Saint Louis led by Dr. Susan Mackinnon, an internationally recognized expert in Peripheral Nerve Surgery.
Dr. Winograd joined the staff of the MGH and Shriners Hospital for Children in 2001. He has an active clinical practice which encompasses the whole spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgery, including patients with surgical problems of the breast and body, the hand and upper and lower extremities, and cosmetic procedures. He has developed a particular focus on reconstructive problems of the peripheral nervous system, such as brachial plexus injuries, thoracic outlet syndrome, and nerve compressions including carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndromes. These also include microsurgical nerve reconstruction after nerve injuries of the extremities and other regions of the body as well as the surgical treatment of chronically painful conditions such as neuropathy or nerve injuries known as neuromas. He is the Director of an active basic science translational research program as well as a clinical research program aimed at improving outcomes after peripheral nerve injuries, and he is the recipient of multiple grant awards from the Consortium for Improving Medicine with Innovation and Technology (a consortium comprised of leading academic scientists and clinicians from MIT, MGH and other Boston area institutions), the DOD, and the NIH. He is the current President of the Massachusetts Society of Plastic Surgeons and is the Secretary and an Executive Board member of the American Society of Peripheral Nerve. I would have to say my experience with Dr. Winograd for both of my procedures has been excellent. His staff, his nursing, the response of his administrator. I am glad that I got a second opinion and I decided to have surgery with him. I would recommend him highly to anyone outside of Mass General and Mass General. I thank him very much for giving me my life back. Thank you.

I had high hopes going into the surgery, and discussed with the doctor the areas of concern, i.e., my eyebrows, my eyelids, my cheeks, and various other areas on my face. He acknowledged what I said, but I was disappointed with the results of my surgery, as some of the areas we discussed were not even touched. He said that some kind of drops were put in my eyes, and to do the surgery on my lids would have damaged my eyesight. I don't understand that at all. I saw no difference in my appearance, and in fact there is a lump on my lip that isn't visible, but it can be felt, that was not there prior to the surgery. I believe I have to have it checked again. I should have had him check it the last time I was there, but I was so disappointed and despondent that I forgot. Overall, I feel it was a waste of time and effort.

The doctor seemed very knowledgeable and was also friendly and approachable.
- Reviewed on 9/14/2025
The doctor seemed busy and reluctant to provide treatment. From a zero depth to a full depth vaginoplasty, the doctor immediately started discussing potential problems that could arise rather than ask questions about me. We did agree that the doctor would discuss with his team and get back to me.

My provider has been exemplary in all stages of diagnosing and the criteria that he believed was most safe for me. And there aren't many doctors out there with the type of diseases that I have that insisted upon me meeting this criteria for my overall health. And then I want you to know is worth its weight in gold. In reference to office staff, there could be some improvement there. And in reference to adjunct staff, such as therapists, i.e. lymphedema therapists and references or recommendations, I think it's best for the lymphedema therapist to reach out to the patient, such as I,

Hello, my name is [redacted], and I'd like to acknowledge Dr. Jonathan Winograd as a fine physician. Absolutely one of the best you'll ever meet. Thank you.

Dr. Winograd is an extremely fine doctor. He is smart, kind, well versed in his specialty, and his diagnosis based on a physical exam, was "right on the money" even before he saw the results of the MRI he ordered. He knows his stuff! After his recommended treatment, the followup visit demonstrated that his questions and concerns were likewise appropriate and excellent. After suffering tremendously for two years, having seen other doctors, my pain was alleviated by Dr. Winograd's recommendation for treatment. I cannot thank him enough for all that he has done for me.

- Reviewed on 5/26/2025
Dr. Winograd is very sincere, compassionate, and you can tell that he cares about his patients and does not let things loss his attention. He's very sensitive and is willing to get his patients and work with them to better the situation at hand, kind of like my situation, and he made me feel better about it. And he's very honest and he's very polite and kind. I wish more surgeons were like him and he made me feel safe to express myself freely for anything, especially the one that I went through, but especially for a surgeon in general can be very nerve-wracking and emotional for most people. And he's very empathetic and very understanding. I think he's one of the best surgeons I've ever had.
