In addition to his clinical passions and an opportunity to pursue them at the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Dr. Sheldon returned to western Mass. because of his genealogical connections to the area – and to Cooley Dickinson – that date back to the mid-1600s.
His eighth great-grandfather, Isaac Sheldon, was one of the first settlers of Northampton and his seventh great-grandfather, John B. Sheldon, helped to settle the town of Deerfield. Dr. Sheldon recently discovered that Caleb Cooley Dickinson, the founder of Cooley Dickinson Hospital, is one of his distant cousins.
