Dr. Havens is an associate surgeon and the director of Emergency General Surgery in the Division of Trauma, Burn and Surgical Critical Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Havens received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his general surgery internship and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also completed his surgical critical care and acute care surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
His clinical research focuses on identifying factors that affect morbidity and mortality in emergency general surgery, specifically looking at rates and risk factors for readmission and pre- or intraoperative factors leading to complications and adverse outcomes. Dr. Haven’s most recent research focuses on small bowel obstructions and creating a pathway to improve patient outcomes, reduce overall hospital stay and identify non-surgical interventions. His research is a multidisciplinary look at emergency general surgery and ways to reduce or mitigate risk of complications.
