Houman Javedan, MD

Dr. Javedan’s interest in caring for older patients became apparent while he was completing his basic surgical training. This interest led him to seek training in internal medicine and a two-year geriatric fellowship, with his second year dedicated to exploring how decisions are made in the clinical care of complex patients. His interest in the older surgical patient prompted him to establish an innovative Geriatric-Orthopedic Trauma Service, in collaboration with orthopedic surgeons at BWH.Through analyzing the outcomes obtained by the service, he has demonstrated a significant improvement in morbidity and mortality of the older surgical patient.

He is the director of inpatient geriatric medicine at BWH and was recently promoted to the Clinical Director for the Division of Aging in the Department of Medicine (DOM). In this role, Dr. Javedan will be charged with implementing co-management programs across key specialties within BWH, with a goal of utilizing the current infrastructure of tertiary services and adding geriatric care pathways with their own dedicated geriatricians to implement them.

In addition to being a clinician, Dr. Javedan is a Harvard Macy Scholar and trained educator. He was promoted to assistant program director of the HMS Multi-Campus Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. He developed, and now teaches, the Geriatric Clinical Reasoning curriculum in the fellowship program, with a specific interest in teaching clinical decision making in the setting of uncertainty and the complexity of older patients.
