About Hiroyuki Aihara

Dr. Hiroyuki Aihara obtained his medical degree (MD) from Jichi Medical School in 1998 and his PhD in gastroenterology in 2011. He is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Endoscopic Tissue Resection Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). In addition, he is a Consulting Staff member in Medical Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and an Affiliate Staff member at the Boston Children's Hospital.

Dr. Aihara's work, both clinical and academic, involves advanced resection techniques for early gastrointestinal cancer. His clinical expertise incorporates Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR), Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM), Submucosal Tunneling Endoscopic Resection (STER), and Image-Enhanced Endoscopy (IEE). Dr. Aihara specializes in the curative endoscopic treatment of superficial gastrointestinal neoplasms and is internationally recognized as an expert in these procedures.

Through research and education, he develops and spreads endoscopic techniques of tissue resection. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and over 50 book chapters and reviews. Dr. Aihara has given lectures nationally and internationally at various prestigious conferences.

Dr. Aihara has earned the Fellowship designation in the American College of Gastroenterology (FACG), the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE), and the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (FJGES). He is Senior Associate Editor of the iGIE Journal and Editorial Review Boards of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and VideoGIE Journal. He is part of the Stomach and Duodenal Diseases Committee of the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO). He was on the ASGE Training Committee from 2018 to 2021 and helped create several endoscopy training guidelines.

His works have won many awards, such as the MGB Innovation Discovery Award (2016) and the Top Reviewer Award from Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (2016-2022), VideoGIE (2018-2022), and Digestive Endoscopy (2020-2021).
