About E Antonio Chiocca

E. Antonio “Nino” Chiocca, MD, PhD has served as the neurosurgeon-in-chief and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham & Women's Hospital and as the Harvey W. Cushing Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School since 2012. Prior to these roles, Dr. Chiocca held assistant professor and associate professor faculty positions at Massachusetts General Hospital and in 2004, became the first chairman of the newly developed Department of Neurological Surgery at the Ohio State University Medical Center, where he held the Dardinger Family Endowed Chair in Oncological Neurosurgery. He is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical School and completed his neurosurgery residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Chiocca is deeply interested both in the biological basis of brain cancer and in designing experimental therapeutics. His current funding includes being the principal investigator of two separate NCI Program project grants and 2 NIH R01s. His lab is focusing on developing novel immune and genetic therapies, and on the role of noncoding RNAs in brain tumor biology. Dr. Chiocca has led multi-institutional clinical trials for gene and viral therapies in malignant gliomas, including holding INDs as Sponsor/PI, has served on NIH study sections, has been a member of the federal recombinant DNA Advisory Committee and has been a member of the NINDS Scientific Advisory Council. 

Dr. Chiocca has also been president of national prestigious organizations, including the Society for Neuro-Oncology, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, and the Society of Neurological Surgery, and currently serves as VP of the American Association of Neurological Surgery. He also serves on scientific advisory boards for foundations, such as the Sontag Foundation, and has consulted as an advisor for several biotechnology companies. He has received several awards and is a fellow of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2014. He has extensive editorial experience for journals and textbooks.
