MaleAbout David Brian Sykes
David completed his undergraduate training in Biochemistry at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He entered the Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D., Ph.D.) at the University of California San Diego and carried out his Ph.D. research with Dr. Mark Kamps where he became interested in the problems that arise during white blood cell development.
David did his internship and residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital as well as a year as a Chief Medical Resident in the Department of Internal Medicine. He was a Hematology and Oncology fellow in the combined Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, MGH Cancer Center fellowship program.
David joined the MGH Cancer Center as an attending in benign hematology. He splits his time between the laboratory (80% research) and clinic (20% direct patient care).
David has a special interest in rare hematologic conditions. In 2011 he defined a new syndrome - the TEMPI syndrome - which affects approximately 20 patients worldwide (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1106670).
David completed his post-doctoral research training in the laboratory of Dr. David Scadden, working to identify new therapies for patients with acute myeloid leukemia.
David transitioned to his own lab as an assistant professor in 2017 (http://sykeslab.com/).
He continues to see patients in clinic on Fridays and see patients in the hospital on the inpatient hematology consult service.

Dr. Sykes is phenomenal. He clarified my misunderstandings about my condition and made sure that I had accurate information. One thing I really appreciate is that he took the time to write down my medical dx and his penmanship is legible. He said if I had any other questions after I leave I can contact him. He escorted me out of the office to the lab. I had assumed that I would need to go to the Wang building for bloodwork. I also had a standing order for bloodwork from another MD, and he graciously agreed it to his bloodwork.

Dr. Sykes was very thorough learning my history. He explored many avenues related to my medical condition and the referral to him. We addressed next steps and he will be following up with me when all results are available after my upcoming surgery. This consultation was requested by my surgeon for Dr. Sykes input. I know he has personally spoken to my surgeron as well regarding the referral and results. All of the staff was friendly, accommodating, and professional during my visit and performing all the tests I needed while in the office.

I cannot speak more highly of Dr. Sykes. This was an initial visit to discuss labs he had ordered and to discuss my recent history of symptoms which began just over a year ago, and the possibility of blood disorders that two of my siblings have been diagnosed with. Dr. Sykes explained in detail, the results of the bloodwork he had ordered and though he was reassuring that my results were relatively good, he asked so many questions and truly listened to me. With the information we exchanged in this one office visit, he provided me with more optimism than I've had in many months. He offered a few other possibilities for the symptoms I am experiencing [redacted] I am so grateful for having met Dr. Sykes. I feel confident in his expertise and yet his kindness and compassion is unsurpassed. [redacted]

Dr Sykes has the best temperament and has always put me at ease-which is remarkable when you walk into the Cancer center initially. He is very adroit at relating the specific tests and what they represent and how they factor into your overall health. You almost forget he is as accomplished as he is. No agenda, except relating to you why you are there and what he is watching and why. He is certainly someone who enjoys talking to people which isn't always the case with specialists. MGH couldn't have done better with anyone else.

Dr. Sykes was terrific. He explained things very clearly and succinctly. He made sure that I understood the issues raised by certain elevated levels from my blood workup. I thought he was extremely knowledgeable, professional and personable. He inspires confidence. My only issue is that he didn't think the levels were significantly high enough to require follow-up. In that case, I would have preferred getting a call from his office confirming that no further action was necessary at this time rather than having to wait 2 months for an appointment where he tells me that there is nothing further that needs to be done. That is not a reflection on Dr. Sykes who again was fantastic; it's more a commentary on the medical profession and cost reimbursement.
