Christopher Vélez, MD is a gastroenterologist practicing within the Center for Neurointestinal Health of the MGH GI division, focusing on the broad category of neurogastroenterology and motility disorders impacting the esophagus stomach, and bowels. He is particularly interested in the diagnosis and medical management of esophageal motility diseases such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, functional heartburn, and achalasia. He collaborates closely with surgical and advanced endoscopy colleagues in the Swallowing, Heartburn, and Esophageal Disease (SHED) Center, including helping improve multidisciplinary collaboration.
Dr. Vélez’s additional clinical and research endeavors include managing the gastrointestinal manifestations of cystic fibrosis, having participated in various Cystic Fibrosis Foundation sponsored initiatives. He is the first gastroenterologist embedded in the MGH Adult CF Clinic, working closely with pulmonologists, dietitians, and therapists. A fluent Spanish speaker, he also has attempted to improve access to gastrointestinal care in the Latino/a community within the greater Boston area, in particular at the MGH Chelsea site. He also studies ways to improve culturally competent care in underserved communities and better understand functional and GI motility disorder manifestation and shared decision making as well.
Having graduated from Harvard College with his bachelor’s degree, Dr. Vélez obtained his medical doctorate from the New York University School of Medicine. He completed his residency, chief residency, and GI fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center, finally coming to MGH to complete a formal advanced fellowship in neurogastroenterology and motility. He serves as the assistant program director of the advanced fellowship in functional and GI motility disorders at MGH, one of only a handful of programs worldwide dedicated exclusively to enhancing subspecialty training in these conditions. Dr. Vélez is intimately involved in fellow education as well. He has authored various book chapters, peer-reviewed work, and lectured locally, regionally, and nationally on various topics related to functional and GI motility diseases.

Dr. Christopher Velez, was absolutely outstanding. I came all the way from Florida to see him and Boston, and he did not disappoint. [redacted] I felt comfortable at the moment I walked in the door. He's sending me for three tests that are very important to my disease, and something they wouldn't do for Florida. I would recommend Dr. Velez, he is a solid 10.

Dr. Velez is always so easy to speak with. He answers my questions and he asks me questions that I can answer. He's always very kind and involved and I know that he is a wonderful doctor.

Dr. Velez and his team were amazing. They seemed well-versed in my medical history. They listened to all my concerns. They had great answers for me and great first steps for me to take in resolving my issue, my medical issue. They were very informative, very supportive, and they gave me a lot of hope that we will find a resolution or some kind of proper treatment for my condition. And I just really appreciate the experience I had with MGH. To be honest, I left a bit emotional, but in a very good way. It was really refreshing to find medical providers who you feel like actually hear your concerns and share your concerns and really want answers for you and want to provide you with the best service.

I've been a little bit scattered lately and Dr. Velez listened to me very patiently and insisted that I not be self-deprecating and I really appreciated that and he gave me good answers and it was a very good experience.

Dr. Velez is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and thorough. I would highly recommend him to people with somewhat complicated health conditions like mine. He was able to get to the bottom of the ongoing painful side effects of my cancer treatment, and my annual follow ups with him always leave me with a sense of relief and gratitude that he is on my care team.

Would highly recommend; the doctors, nurses, and staff were all kind and respectful, as well as being extremely knowledgable to provide necessary care effectively.

I understand why he is masked in clinical encounters but the dilemma this poses is how to make a personal connection. I saw no attempt to truly understand the person with the symptoms. He did not make a human connection. All it takes is a few words with eye contact directed away from the computer screen, which occupied all of his attention. I'm sure he's a bright guy, etc but his bedside manner is non-existent.

Dr. Velez is an incredible provider who helped me navigate gastroparesis. I wouldn't be able to function without his medical expertise. I'm a NP and find his knowledge and bedside manner to be incredible.

I speak very highly of Dr. Velez. I recommend him to anyone who tells me they need to see him for stomach issues, because he's a professor, a very good doctor who explains things very well and is easy to understand in their own language. I would definitely recommend him, both as a general practitioner and specifically as Dr. Velez, to everyone. Bye.
