Caroline Mitchell, MD runs a referral vulvovaginitis clinic at the Massachusetts General Hospital and is a faculty member in the Vincent Center for Reproductive Biology.
Dr. Mitchell received her BA in Women’s Studies from Harvard College and spent 2 years in the Peace Corps in Southern Africa before returning to Harvard Medical School for her MD degree. She did her residency training at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she also received her MPH degree. She spent 7 years on faculty at the UW before returning to MGH in 2014.
She values her roles as both clinician and teacher and strives to provide excellent clinical care and education. As Director of the Vulvovaginal Disorders program, Dr. Mitchell takes care of patients with vulvitis, vulvar dermatoses, recurrent vaginitis and genitourinary symptoms of menopause.
Dr. Mitchell spends the majority of her time in the lab doing translational and basic science research. As a physician-scientist she has developed an independent research program and is working towards answering clinical questions that will make a difference for thousands of women. Her work focuses on the relationship between the vaginal microbiota and the reproductive mucosal immune response, and how interactions between humans and our microbes influence reproductive health.
She is a Principal Investigator for the first US FDA-approved clinical trial of vaginal microbiome transplant as a treatment for chronic bacterial vaginosis. She has received funding from the NIH, the Doris Duke Foundation, American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation and Harvard Catalyst to study the role of the vaginal microbiome in reproductive health and is an MGH Claflin Award recipient.
When she is not in the lab or providing clinical care, Dr. Mitchell enjoys reading, running with her dog, hiking or playing board games with her family.

I thought this care provider was exceptional. She had a great bed side manner and was very detailed and methodical in ascertaining medical information. Dr. Mitchell was extremely knowledgeable and her approach was well thought out and organized. She called me personally to explain the abnormal findings on my ultrasound. I felt confident in the care I was receiving I would not hesitate to highly recommend this doctor to any women seeking gynecological care.

Dr. Mitchell is the kindest, most patient doctor I think that I've encountered in a long time. She takes the time, she listens, she explains everything. She just is an excellent doctor and great as far as I'm concerned, you know, being a patient. I don't think she could improve on anything. So she gets a 10 in my book. Thank you.

I am a patient of Dr. Mitchell and I've been seeing her for a little bit more than a year now. She's really attentive, really listens to what you say and has, I guess, what people would say good bedside manners. And she's really patient and explains things pretty thoroughly. And I'd recommend her to anybody that needs her specialty care. And I look forward to meeting her every time I need to check in with her. And I'd recommend her to anyone.

I always look forward to seeing Dr Mitchell once a year. Each time I tell her that I greatly appreciate her knowledge, expertise, and her wonderful doctor-patient 'bedside' manner. She is so nice, is a great listener, and answers all of my questions. I feel lucky to have Dr Mitchell as my GYN in MassGeneral, the world-class teaching hospital.

Dr. Mitchell was the first doctor in two years with this issue to really listen to my description of the problem, review my history, ask key questions, explain what she was doing and why, review the results with me in the office, debunk erroneous diagnoses I had received to date, explain why previous diagnosis was not correct, and clearly explain the prescription and suggestions to manage symptoms.
