About Avinash Kambadakone Ramesh

Dr. Avinash Kambadakone is the inaugural Mass General Brigham Academic Abdominal Radiology Chief, and, in this role, he leads the integration of academic abdominal imaging clinical, research and educational programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). He is an Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. He is the founding Director of the Center for Research and Innovation in Abdominal Imaging at MGH and serves as the Medical Director of the Radiology Department at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Dr. Kambadakone is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in imaging of the pancreas, hepatobiliary system and gastrointestinal tract. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists, the Society for Advanced Body Imaging, the Society of Abdominal Radiology and American College of Radiology. Dr. Kambadakone was awarded the highly prestigious McGovern Award for Clinical Excellence at MGH in 2021, a testament to his commitment to clinical excellence.

Dr. Kambadakone earned his medical degree from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India, in 2002, and was honored with the prestigious Dr. TMA Pai Gold Medal for Best Outgoing Student. He completed his residency in Radiology at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, in 2005, graduating with the Gold Medal for academic excellence. After completing an Abdominal Imaging and Interventional Radiology fellowship at MGH, he joined the MGH Radiology Faculty in 2012. In March 2019, Dr. Kambadakone was appointed Service Chief, Computed Tomography and assumed the role of Division Chief of Abdominal Imaging at MGH in June 2020.

Dr. Kambadakone’s research focuses primarily on clinical applications of cutting-edge CT innovations in abdominal imaging including dual or multi-energy CT and novel CT-based imaging biomarkers such has CT perfusion and CT texture analysis in abdominal malignancies. He was awarded an RSNA Research Seed grant in 2016 and has served as PI for several extramural research grants. He has authored and co-authored over 275 peer-reviewed research publications, review articles and textbook chapters. Dr. Kambadakone serves as Associate Editor of Abdominal Radiology as well as the Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography. A dedicated educator, he has led numerous several regional, national and international educational courses focused on Abdominal CT and dual-energy CT. As an influential national leader, he serves as the Portfolio Director for Science and Research in the Society of Abdominal Radiology, a critically important leadership role in helping advance research and innovation in the field. Dr. Kambadakone is on the Board of Directors of the Society for Advanced Body Imaging and is the Vice Chair of the GI subcommittee at RSNA. He was the inaugural Chair of the SAR Disease-Focused Panel on Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma and is a key contributor to ACR LI-RADS, having served as chair of its technique working group. His service to the Society for Advanced Body Imaging was rewarded with the inaugural Wittling Service Award in 2022.
