MaleAbout Andrew M Brunner
Myelodysplastic syndromes are disorders of the bone marrow associated with bone marrow failure and a risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia. My clinical area of focus and research projects are focused toward understanding treatment patterns and patient outcomes in MDS and other advanced hematologic malignancies, and to develop new treatments for these patients. The therapies available for patients with MDS have not changed in the last decade, and there is critical need to develop new agents and identify the patients most likely to benefit from a given chemotherapy. I am involved in clinical trials for all stages of MDS with an overall goal of tailoring treatment to improve the outcomes of these patients.

My experience at MGH was positive in all respects. Dr. Brunner was exceedingly pleasant and thorough in both the discussion and exam before the bone marrow biopsy. [redacted]

Dr Brunner was just wonderful--everything you could hope for in a cancer doctor (or any doctor) and more--kind, patient, reassuring. Although I hate commuting from the suburbs through the traffic chaos to MGH, I will continue to do so because I value his thoughtfulness and caring so much. One feels in very safe hands when he's your physician.

Yeah, Dr. Brunner was one of the best doctors I've ever seen. And I think you're lucky at Mass General to have him on your staff.

I was referred to Dr. Brunner by my cardiologist. Dr. Brunner listened to my concerns and clearly explained what he is recommending for determining the root cause of my condition. I really appreciate this kind of comprehensive care approach and understood the rationale for this recommendation. Dr. Brunner made me feel comfortable and was easy to talk with. I look forward to continuing with him for my care.

He seemed irritated. I felt like he was implying that I was taking the wrong course of action.

Not sure if I saw a "nurse"...was that the professional who took my vitals, or the lab professionals who did my blood work? They all were very competent and pleasant. I do not know if Dr. Brunner realizes how much effort I put in to staying well physically and mentally; perhaps my comment about "living to 100" was a hint; my struggle with the eye issue did resolve a lot with the ensuing phlebotomy thus this week I have felt more like my normal self. I am open to medication changes to decrease the rate of phlebotomizes necessary, but feel a little defensive about their side effects as I have a lot of responsibilities this fall. Something tells me I am too hard on myself....or we all are in these challenging times; or better said... we are perfectly imperfect.

Dr. Brunner is an exceptional physician and I am fortunate that he is my physician.

He is tops in my opinion. He is very through and knows my case very well.

He is a very kind, smart person. What bothers me is that I have not received much of any perspective on my disease for example what's in store for me, the possibilities, how does this disease evolve generally, what about the downward path of my hemoglobin, how does the gene -5q fit into the picture. Some of these questions he did answer but he never offers any info except my lab results. I have to ask. And when I had been there about 20 minutes he showed signs of ending the appt - he was itchy to leave. I had driven 2.5 hrs from Maine and he acted as if a 20 min appt. Was sufficient. Despite all this I like him very much but want more empathy and interest from him. A connection. He never asks anything such as how am I doing. In other ways he is very generous. [redacted]

My experience was very good. They listened to me, they were very professional. I came with my daughter, and we both left satisfied. I know doctors are busy, busy in the world today. And he wasn't real late, but it would have been nice if he was a little bit earlier, but I understand it also. Thank you.

He also recommended that I see an MGH cardiologist given my history and the symptoms I described. I really appreciate this kind of comprehensive care approach and understood the rationale for this recommendation. Dr. Brunner made me feel comfortable and was easy to talk with. I look forward to continuing with him for my MDS care and related matters.
