About James D Berry

Dr. Berry provides care for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He is the Winthrop Family Scholar in ALS Sciences, the Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) multidisciplinary ALS clinic and Chief of the Division of ALS and Motor Neuron Diseases. He has worked to better serve people with ALS by building the tools and team required to extend the reach of the MGH clinic team beyond the walls of the physical clinic. The ALS House Call program and video televisit program are examples of exciting initiatives at the MGH ALS clinic.

Dr. Berry works as an ALS researcher, designing, overseeing, and carrying out trials at MGH and centers across the country. His work is focused on the identification of markers of ALS in blood and spinal fluid, with an emphasis on markers of abnormal inflammation. He collaborates broadly with researchers around the globe on these biomarker efforts. He is also actively working to develop mobile health and digital phenotyping methods to better understand ALS and hasten the development of new therapies, while reducing the burden of trial participation for people with ALS.

Dr. Berry is also the Director of the MGH Neurological Clinical Research Institute (NCRI) and Director of the Mass General Brigham Neurodegenerative Clinical Research Fellowship. He is a member of the Massachusetts ALS Registry team and CDC/ATSDR National ALS Registry and Biorepository Expert Panels. In addition, he is on the Executive Committee of the NEALS Consortium, a national organization for ALS clinical researchers, where he also leads the NEALS Biorepository and Technology in ALS subcommittee.

I have now been to three different ALS clinics since my diagnosis. By far, Dr. Barry was the most informed and experienced of all the providers that I have seen. He gave me more information about where I likely am in the progression of my disease and about possible treatment plans. Even though Boston is far away from Maryland, I am certain that this clinic is the right place for me to be. The level of care from this multi disciplinary clinic is worth the effort. It will take to travel there.

Yes, I was very happy with Dr. Berry. He was very knowledgeable about clinical studies and about different things regarding medications for ALS. So I felt comfortable talking to him and understood everything he had mentioned to me and my family. He was very knowledgeable. Thank you.

I always feel like I'm in good hands when I see Dr. Berry. He is so knowledgeable but yet down to earth.

He typically arrives late but stays as long as necessary to answer all my questions, and to demonstrate that he cares. He also ensures that people I need to see (speech therapists, his RN, and his PT specialist) visit with me after my visit with him (dr Berry).

The first person to see me introduced himself by his first name only. Later I asked for his last name. I don't know his status: ?Fellow,?Resident,??? In the world of medicine, Providers usually use their title/ credentials. He was great and so was Dr. Berry

All parts of care are fantastic....just a bit of chaos in and around the hospital, but that's expected, it's boston after all

For a diagnosis that is scary, and certianly not anything anyone wants to go through, I feel that my husband is in the best of hands with the team at MGH. I immediatley felt as though we had come in to an extended family.

Dr. Berry is excellent. He went above and beyond. We are very, very impressed and blessed.

Understand that this was a virtual telephone visit and except for the lack of anything hands-on it was full of medical information, review of history, and recommendations for future exploration. He was well informed and supportive.

I guess we were happy with Dr. Berry and the entire multidisciplinary personnel that we met. And as awful as the situation is, I think we're in good hands. And we were able to answer some more questions, or all of them, actually. And if they weren't sure, they we're pretty open about the possibilities. So we're looking forward to the next visit.

I really appreciate being able to see Dr Berry and his fellow Dr [redacted]. Their advice means so much to me as I live with ALS. I understand their busy research schedules, but they took enough time to answer my many questions. Thank you again to the whole ALS team.
